德化陶瓷制作历史悠久，制瓷技术在不断发展基础上传承创新。陶瓷制作过程看似原始和简单，但实际上考验了陶艺家对泥土特性的把握和操纵的熟练程度。

2002年由新加坡亚洲文明博物馆出版的《中国白——德化白瓷》(Blanc de Chine—porcelain from Dehua)一书，收录了Kenson Kwok(郭勒逊)：A Note on the Construction of Dehua Figures《德化瓷雕结构的一点看法》一文，文中详细讨论了德化传统陶瓷的制作工艺，是一篇不可多得的德化陶瓷研究资料。与此同时，该文结合收藏家希克利收藏的160件德化窑精品，为了解、品鉴、研究德化白瓷提供借鉴。

在郭勒逊的文章中，总结了德化陶瓷三种主要制作方法，即模印成型、注浆成型、及手工捏塑成型，比较系统地对德化瓷雕制作工艺进行诠释。

Hand-Modelling

Only one figure in the Hickley collection appears not to have been constructed by either of the above methods. The laughing Damo holding a single shoe appears to have been a fully hand-modelled construction, with the exception of the head. The X-ray confirms that the figure is largely hollow and held together by the sheets of drapery which join the bare chest to the exposed lower legs (Fig. 9). This construction is only possible in a piece that has been built up by hand.

A circular opening cut into the base probably allowed the insertion of an armature into the body cavity up to around the level of the waist. The armature would have supported the figure during its construction, and been removed only after the hand-built rockwork at the rear of the figure (which, together with the two legs, acts as the support for the figure) was in place.

手工成型

在希克利的藏品里，仅有一个瓷塑看上去并未采用前文所提及的任何一种制作方法进行制作。那尊手持一只鞋的笑面达摩瓷雕（如下图所示），除了头部，似乎是一件完全依靠手工制作而成的作品。通过 X 光检测得以证实，这件瓷雕的大部分为空心结构，并且是借助连接裸露胸部以及暴露小腿的衣服进行塑形（如图 9 所示）。可以说，这样的瓷雕唯有通过纯手工制作的方式才有可能实现。

在这件瓷雕的底座上，开设有一个圆形的开口，借助这个开口，能够将一个支架插入到瓷雕的体腔之中，插入的深度可直至腰部的高度。这个支架在瓷雕制作的过程中起着支撑作用，只有当后续手工制作的位于瓷塑后部的假山（其连同两个支撑腿，共同作为瓷雕的支撑部件）全部制作完成之后，才会将支架拆除。
