Slip-Casting
A number of the figures in the Hickley collection have been made by the slip-casting technique, which has the advantage over press-moulding of a much higher speed of production. The technique as applied in Dehua today makes use of plaster piece-moulds that absorb water from the liquid clay slip, leaving behind a uniform layer of residual clay that takes on the shape of the mould. After some minutes, the moulds are removed, the parts luted together if need be, and set out to dry to leather hardness before they are worked on by hand(Fig. 5).
An X-ray of a slip-cast figure shows the smooth profile and even thickness of the walls(Fig. 6), quite unlike figures which have been press-moulded(Fig. 4). In cases where it is possible to see clearly inside the body cavity, the liquid appearance of the way in which the clay slip has set gives away the fact that a figure has been slip-cast (Fig. 8). Another difference between press-moulded and slip-cast figures is the absence of firing cracks in the latter due to minimal luting and absence of gouging or excavation of the clay.
The heads of the slip-cast figures were cast separately, then joined to the torso. The neck may either be hollow (Fig. 7), or there is no co
ection between the body and head cavities(Fig. 8). Inthe latter case, the air in the head escapes through tiny holes in the ears or nostrils, similar to the press-moulded heads with a solid neck plug.
